What is the Bilirubin Test?
A yellow-brown substance produced by bile. It is formed by destroying aged red blood cells in the liver, eliminated from the body by excretion. Therefore, within this kit, we will determine your level.
Why get one?
We check it to assess liver function and monitor liver conditions such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, and gallstones.
How to place an Order?
Firstly Order your Bilirubin kit online and once it arrive collect your sample at home.
Then, drop off the Kit in the morning to the Royal Mail Red Street Box. Use the Track24/48 Return Label to the Lab.
Finally, once your results are ready, we will send you an email with your certificate.
1 BioMarker:
- Total Bilirubin: measures the amount of bilirubin level in your blood.
How long do results take?
The target time for the results is 1 working day. However, we also offer a while-you-wait service for £50.
But remember to get your sample off on the same day, too. But don’t hang on to it after you have filled the tube. And make sure that your timing is good for the collection box. Also, ensure you deliver it a few minutes before the collection time, not after that time.

What are the Common Questions?
-
Q: Firstly, what is this pigment?
- A: It is a fluid in your liver which helps digest food.
-
Q: And why is this sampling done?
- A: To measure the Billirubin levels of it in your blood. If you have a high level of blood, it can cause jaundice, which can make your skin and eyes turn yellow.
-
Q: What are the symptoms of high levels?
- A: The major symptoms can be fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, heartburn, constipation, nausea, and yellowing skin and eyes.
-
Q: What are the risks of high levels?
- A: High levels are characterised by a wide variety of conditions, some of which can become dangerous or deadly if untreated: hepatitis, cirrhosis, haemolytic anaemia, liver cancer, and gallstones.
-
Q: But what can cause high levels?
- A: Medications, exercise, or certain foods.
-
Q: How can I reduce high levels?
- A: To lower your levels, you should stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, have a healthy diet, eat lots of fruits and vegetables and eat wholegrain bread, brown rice, and potatoes to increase your fibre intake.
What is the Scientific Data from Instrument and Reagent Supplier?
Technology Method:
Fully automatic biochemistry analyser
Limit of Detection:
1.71 umol/L
Accuracy and Precision:
Total Bilirubin: The approximate error is < ± 10%. The within-assay CV is ≤ 2.53%. The between-assay CV is ≤ 2.80%.
Measuring Range:
1.71~684 umol/L
Accuracy and Precision:
The accuracy relies on the approximate error percentage. This percentage is the percentage deviation from the actual result. However, the precision relies on the within-assay coefficient of variations and the between-assay coefficient. The within-assay coefficient of variations is the variance of the result value if the same Billirubin Sample was analysed again. The between assay coefficient is the variance of the result value if the same sample was reprocessed from the beginning again.
In range results:
3.4~20.5 umol/L
Out-of-range results:
Any result outside the listed reference ranges would be considered abnormal and may be a sign of liver disease or liver damage. However, please consult with your GP or healthcare professional.

A Billirubin Shared Story
A mother suffering from a rare disease talks about how she combines children and therapies
Beatrice explains what Crigler-Najjar Syndrome is and how important experimental therapies and research are.
So, born in Manchester, Beatrice is 39 years old and is the mother of three children, Leonardo (10 years old), Samuel (8 years old) and Giosuè (one-month-old). But she began having health problems from birth. And after a few days of life, she presents altered liver values. But only after a long time will she be able to name this strange disease.
A rare disease still without cure today is Crigler-Najjar Syndrome.
The only therapy available after a positive Test is phototherapy accompanied by pharmacological support or liver transplant. Phototherapy allows the altered values to be restored and patients to lead a fairly normal life. Thanks to the spring Io per Leidi Telethon campaign dedicated in particular to “rare mothers,” we reached Beatrice to learn more about her beautiful story of courage, great challenges, and gigantic results.
What is Crigler-Najjar Syndrome?
It is a rare disease of bilirubin metabolism. However, it is a waste product of the red blood cell caused by deficiency or defective functioning of a mutated enzyme called UGT. It is responsible for “preparing” bilirubin for physiological elimination by binding bilirubin molecules to its molecule. Sugars. Therefore, in this way, an accumulation occurs, which, being a waste material, is toxic and must be eliminated from the body in some way because it could lead to death from cerebral coma.
There are two forms of this genetic disease.
The enzyme is completely absent in type 1, the most severe form (the one I suffer from). It is characterized by high levels of unconjugated bilirubin, giving early and intense jaundice in the neonatal phase. In type 2, however, the enzymatic deficiency is only partial. Consequently, serum levels are lower, and residual enzymatic activity remains. In this case, phototherapy can be performed for fewer hours.
But How do you keep it under control?
Those affected usually obtain regular Bilirubin checkups. Those affected also by Crigler-Najjar Syndrome are forced to sleep 8/10 hours every night naked under large phototherapy lamps. Also, this is a blue light with a specific wavelength that has been found to have the same function as the UGT enzyme I mentioned earlier.
Therapy and Support
Thanks to this therapy and my father’s unwavering support, I could live “almost normally,” study, experience the typical youth experiences, and establish myself in the world of work. I am a researcher in the field of biotechnology and have built a family—I have three children. Doing phototherapy, however, was not always so easy. When I was little, the lamps available were bulky, and the beneficial effect was limited.
Therefore, I had to make a lot of sacrifices.
My father, Velio, changed my life and the lives of others with Crigler-Najjar Syndrome by building seven phototherapy lamps that were increasingly smaller and more functional, within reach of trips and excursions. Once lamps were bulky and fragile, my father produced a portable lamp that fit into a trolley. However, it’s another life! When you sleep away from home, having this special trolley and finding a small, heated room is necessary because phototherapy must be performed without clothes.
